But several years ago, they switched to a water soluble dye that was prone to rubbing off onto the player's fingers and bleeding onto the top finish. I used micro mesh sheets to polish the wood after the stain was fully dry (24 hours later), then Fret Doctor to condition the wood and bring out the grain. Maybe Yamaha dyed the Ebony to make it more uniform in color, and you are wearing off the dye? May 18, 2022 · There are many examples I've seen of newer guitars having striped ebony bridge and fretboard, particularly on the 18 series. However, the ebony has many open pores -- almost like rosewood, whereas the ebony fretboards on my other guitars are very dense and have virtually no pores. The guitar's body is a black/grey colour but the rosewood fretboard looks out of place to me and I think it would look better if it was black/ebony. If you look up Taylor Guitars Ebony on Google you will find some general information about the history of harvesting ebony (for examples that are predominately black) and the problems it has caused for the species. Although I happen to think that non-black ebony is beautiful, yes, it's fairly easy to dye the stuff, if that's what you want. I've run across articles where people dye their rosewood board to look like ebony but that isn't quite the same as ebonizing a much cheaper wood. Not all ebony is dark black.
